Jason McAteer

Jason McAteer

Born in 1971, Jason McAteer is a retired professional footballer who represented five clubs during his career - Bolton, Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers, Sunderland and Tranmere Rovers. He also played at international level gaining a total of fifty two caps for the Republic of Ireland.

A talented footballer, Jason showed promise from an early age. His big break came in 1991 when, at the age of twenty, he was spotted by scouts for Bolton Wanderers. He made his debut for the team in a match against Burnley in 1992. He stayed with Bolton until 1995 enjoying what was a considerably successful period of time for the team.

At the start of the 1995 / 1996 season he signed for Liverpool (his childhood heroes) in a £4.5 million transfer. He made his mark as a right wing back and brought a breath of fresh air to the team. He went on to appear one hundred and thirty nine times for Liverpool, scoring six goals in the process. Jason was tireless in his efforts and he was a regular player between the years of 1995 and 1997.

He was sold in 1999 to Blackburn Rovers for a fee of £4 million and played a part in their promotion to the Premier League in 2001.

In 2001 Jason was sold to Sunderland for £1 million. During this season he made twenty seven appearances for the club, but unfortunately could not stop them from being relegated to the First Division in 2002-2003. He remained at the Stadium of Light for another year until 2004 which saw a move to Wirral team Tranmere Rovers.

During his time with Tranmere, Jason trained as a coach hoping to pursue a career in this upon retirement.

Jason represented the Republic of Ireland fifty two times between the years of 1994 and 2004. He played in the 1994 and 2002 World Cups. One of the highlights of his career was undoubtedly when he scored the sixty-seventh minute winner in September 2001 when the ten-man Ireland team triumphed over Holland. This put the Republic of Ireland on course for qualification for the 2002 World Cup.

Jason now works in media and has also been involved in charity work. In 2005 he helped organise tsunami soccer aid which raised over half a million pounds. He has also made several appearances for the Liverpool legends who play in charity games around the world.

Jason McAteer is also an after dinner speaker and is available for after dinner speaking all over the United Kingdom. To book Jason call AJ Promotions on 01704 834493 or 07799720483.
